It is often unknown market leaders—so-called hidden champions—whose innovation spirit secures prosperity in this country. But which companies are particularly innovative? Using an objective, data-driven methodology, the German Association for Consumer Studies (DtGV) identified for stern the 500 most innovative Mittelstand companies (SMEs) in Germany. The basis for this was the “patent performance” in the period from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2024.
All listed companies have applied for at least four patents. Companies could not apply to be included in the list. The methodology was determined by the independent DtGV institute together with the stern editorial team. The companies were evaluated; products were not tested.
The study includes all companies that generate up to one billion euros in revenue and can therefore be counted as part of the Mittelstand (SME).
Patent performance reflects all patents granted during the study period and, in addition, their relevance to the “innovation activity of the economy.”
To determine this, the analysis examined how often granted patents are cited in other patents and, conversely, how often other patents are mentioned in granted patents.
The results were converted into a score. Each company was assigned to one of 31 industries—from waste and recycling to tool manufacturing.
